Prototypes & Special Orders

HIKSTIK.COM, LLC is always tinkering and testing to improve our lacrosse handles. We've tried a number of different combinations of woods, shapes, and adhesives. We've tested a variety of finishes and occasionally we have a customer that has very specific needs for a wood lacrosse shaft. This section shows some of our trial prototype shafts and "special", special-orders that have come through our shop recently. If you have an idea for a wood lacrosse shaft, let us know -- our craftsmen will probably want to try it out.

85-Piece Wood Lacrosse Shaft with Clear Shield™ (CS)

This shaft is a work of art; it's absolutely spectacular. It is 31" and 10.5 ounces, made from purpleheart, hickory, and Texas red oak. The center ply is laid on a diagonal bias to preserve the strength and enhance the beauty of this shaft.

85 Piece Wood Shaft

Purpleheart 5-Ply Laminate (available)

Made out of leftover scrap lumber cuttings, this shaft is used by our company Sales Manager on his daily setup. He claims he sells lots of our lax shafts just by showing off the workmanship in this wood handle. The center core is a triple laminate of 1/4" inch strips of purpleheart and a 1/8" inch ash center strip. The strong, light-weight ash sidewalls are the same as on the shafts we sell everyday. This handle has the Clear Shield™ finish, but no stain, so the true beauty of the wood grain shows through.

Purpleheart 5-Ply Laminate (available)

This is the inverse of the wood shaft above. It's got three ply's of purpleheart and two ply's of hickory. This is what it looked like on the day it was retired after two years of high-school varsity level game play and practices; almost as good as new!

 

 

 

 

 

 

Bamboo with Clear Shield™ (CS) (available)

Bamboo Lacrosse ShaftReally! It is a bamboo lacrosse shaft. This is something we have been researching and testing for a while. It is eight to nine strips of natural bamboo that have been heat pressed and laminated together with our super-strong adhesive. The finished product is 13% lighter than hickory and is just as strong, with a bit more flex. Our production bamboo shafts will be a few shades darker than this prototype.

Seven Ply White Ash with Clear Shield™ (CS) (sold)

This shaft has seven plies of tight-grained White Ash, laid up with each grain pattern opposing the ones on either side, and held together with our super secret, super strong adhesive. Unfortunately, our intention is ultimately to destroy this shaft. That's right, this wood shaft will go into destructive testing very soon. We want to know if its strength-to-weight ratio is better than a solid Ash shaft. If it works, this may be a strong candidate for future sales.

Seven Ply Ash Lacrosse Shaft

Retro Woodie (sold)

This shaft was ordered by a movie producer -- one of his movies won an Academy Award -- pretty cool. Anyway, he was getting back into lacrosse and wanted an Ash shaft with no finish for his old STX head. But his old head had a 7/8" inch round throat -- so we had to modify our wood shaft to fit his head. The result was a very cool "retro woodie" and another satisfied customer!

Five Ply Purpleheart Laminate (sold)

This thing is a 326g (11.5oz) beast! Because purpleheart is so rare and expensive, we've never made a solid purpleheart shaft before this. This shaft was made out 5 strips and laid up with our amazing, ultra-strong adhesive. This shaft is so tight, you can't see the seams between the laminates. Then we added three coats of our super hard Clear Shield™ finish and voila, this is what came out. The true color, a deep purplish-brown of the wood really shows on this shaft. This one will probably go into destructive testing soon, just to see what kind of strength numbers we get.
